5 signs of cult

Whenever I am asked to talk on a radio show, or to conduct some kind of speaking event, I am always asked about cults. People are fearful of being involved is some crazy wicked cult. The sad truth of the matter is, I can’t blame them. They should be afraid, very afraid. Why, because there are some crazy people in these practices.  I managed to come across my fair share of cults, and managed to escape unscathed. Now, I am going to tell you the five signs that you should look for to determine if your religious group is a cult.

Understand the truth about religion and spirituality

A cult is more about power and control than it is about spirituality and enlightenment. These people come into these practices because they want to expand their influence. They also want to expand their sense of power and self-worth. People in cults are goal-oriented. Watch out for them, because they have an agenda. Nine times out of ten, they are in these practices to get their basic needs met. So listen to them. Do they always talk about themselves? Do they want people to “obey” them? Is their way the “only” way?  Do they twist around your words? Do they take credit for the blessings in your life? Do they tell how they can heal you?  If you hear any thing of these things, you need to run for your life.

No respectable healer takes credit for miracles. They don’t take credit for your blessings, or for healing you. You do all of these things yourself. All that power is inside of you. So don’t give away your power to these crazy fools.

My religion allows me to have more than one wife.

Okay, for the record, being married to more than one person is illegal in the United States. Now, I know that there are some cultures in Africa and in the Middle East where a man can have more than one wife. However, in these cultures, the man is responsible for taking care of all of his wives. So if Will Smith comes to you and ask you to be his second wife, you might just consider it. Will Smith is well off, and he believes in the power of the Goddess. But if a guy walks up to you, without a pot to piss in, you need to bounce. There are women who would say, well am not with him because of the money. Well guess what? He is.  He is with you and five other women because he wants to feel a sense of power. So if you’re in a religious group and a man has a whole bunch of women doting on him, cooking, cleaning, washing his clothes, you need to go! Quickly.

Cult leaders believe in uneven exchanges.

In my article, “Is Voodoo Real,” I talk about how everything in our universe works on exchanges. As an example, human being gives plants carbon dioxide and they give us oxygen. Of course, we have a monetary system that is based on a series of exchanges.  Now, you have to make sure that you’re getting the most value for your buck. However, these exchanges become lopsided when people began to use trickery and dissimulation. For example, I knew someone who would make all kinds of guarantees to lure people in.  Then, once he had their money, he would come up with every excuse in the book of why the spell/ incantation/ service didn’t work. He would even go as far as to blame the client. This kind of behavior is not only unethical, but also damaging to all that our ancestors stood for. We healers are here to make sure that people are in a better position than what we found them in. If we can’t get them to evolve, progress, or heal. We didn’t only fail them. We also failed ourselves.

Be aware of false prophets, gurus, messiahs, and spiritual kings.

I love these guys, mostly because they are completely delusional.  They really believe that they are more powerful and important than what they actually are. But let me tell you a secret. If a person is powerful, that power will manifest into the physical world. For example, Pope Francis is a powerful man. He has a presence that is recognized all over the world. The Dalai Lama, another spiritual guy with a huge presence.  He has a lot of power. So do you want to know who’s not powerful, the man with no home, no wife, no money, and is begging to sleep on your couch because he believes that he is the next messiah. These people are not spiritual. They’re crazy, and they need to be committed.

Be weary of infectious people

Be mindful of the people who don’t believe in money—yet they want you to pay their rent, or buy them food. Be weary of the people who always got some shit going on. They’re always involved in some form of confrontation, they can’t keep a job, and they have a past that is plagued with bad relationships. Avoid these people at all cost, because they’re going to infect you with their madness, and misfortune. The whole point of us being involved in esoteric practices is to heal and have better lives, not to spiral into a lifestyle of strife and misery.  So be sure to consider these signs to determine if your religious group is indeed a cult.
