The difference between Hoodoo and Voodoo stem beyond one being traditional and one being mystical and magical. African derived religions were prohibited from being practiced in the United States. In the American South, people were executed for practicing any other religion aside from Christianity. Furthermore, African slaves attained more privileges when they converted to Christianity. The same rules also applied to black people throughout the diaspora. However, Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and even Puerto Rico had a large influx of African slaves who were able to maintain their religions for a much longer period of time.
