We have to look at the legend of Pandora’s box.  I am a big fan of Greek and Roman mythology. I especially love the story where Pandora approaches her lover Epimetheus with a jar––it wasn’t a box. The box was locked and came with a key, and message that said, do not open. Naturally, Pandora was curious and opened the box. When she did this, everything bad flew out of the box, envy, sickness, hate, and disease. Pandora tried to close the box, but it was much too late. Epimetheus storms into the room and sees that Pandora is weeping. He walks over to the box and sees that it has been opened. But just right when he tries to close it again, a little bug flies out in the name of hope.

Contrary to popular belief, the underlying moral of this story is to follow directions, or that our curiosity for the unknown might destroy us. This story represents the process of two people falling in love. People normally keep all of their bad emotions locked up in their heart, only to be released when someone comes along, and opens our heart with a magic key. This key releases all the negative emotions that have been trapped inside of us for so long. We love the feeling of love, but love comes at a hefty price. With love, we also get jealousy, envy, fear, and discontentment. All of these emotions rise up from the recesses of our subconscious mind. We fail to understand that the person who has the key to our hearts, is also the person who can heal our wounds––wounds that have inhibited us from loving fully. Then, we engage in the ultimate battle between love and fear. Do we surrender to the love that our partner is giving us? Or do we succumb to the fears that have inhibited us our whole lives?

When we surrender to our fear, we begin to develop hostile and very disparaging feelings toward our spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend. These feelings often amount to terrible breakup/separations or ugly divorces where couples literally hate one another. This disdain can even erupt into violence, emotional, and verbal abuse. In many situations, people close off, vowing to lock their hearts up forever, so that no one can ever release all their terrible emotions with that magic key.  This heartbreak doesn’t have to come from a spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend. Our first heartbreaks normally come from our parents and childhood friends.
